Mental Health Support
The journey of pregnancy and beyond can bring feelings of worry, sadness, distress and anger, especially if you are experiencing fertility problems, or are impacted by stillbirths or miscarriages. Depression and anxiety can happen at any time and there is support available to help you.
Counselling
Having fertility problems and receiving fertility treatments can add to emotional distress. Seeking fertility counselling can help you prepare for your fertility journey, cope with unsuccessful treatments or problems, and develop strategies to deal with other people’s fertility and pregnancy journeys.
Depression and Anxiety
Postnatal depression is common and can affect parents of newborns. Common symptoms include low mood, changes in sleep and appetite, and feelings of hopelessness. It is important to remember that everyone’s experience is unique, and there are different degrees of mental health decline. People who have postnatal anxiety may experience similar symptoms to postnatal depression (and some will have postnatal depression at the same time). You may need different treatments depending on what you are experiencing, and it is important to seek help. You can use the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at home which is used to help identify people who may have postnatal depression and/or anxiety. You can find this scale on Beyond Blue’s site here.
Pregnancy Loss and Grief Support
Everyone experiences pregnancy loss differently, both physically and emotionally. In the following weeks, it is important to look after yourself not just physically, but emotionally, as you process what you have been through. Take the time to care for your wellbeing. There is information and support to help you through this time.
